I think the answer to this problem is very simple.  If I knew how to get a
message to the administrator, I would send a short note telling them that I
have used the site to broaden my knowledge of ferrets, and would suggest
that closing down the site would deny other persons in our global network
the chance to learn.  After all, a university is a place to learn.  I would
think that 15 -20 letters from people from many countries might suggest to
the university that perhaps Ferret World might be worth keeping, especially
if Mr. Poore were to acknowledge the university's donation of "web access".
 
ps.  15 -20 letters?.......GET REAL .... I KNOW the FML !
