Chris,
THE latest information (the info you are specificly looking for) on the
California situation is at the Californians for Ferret Legalization web site:

I'm sure Jeanne, Legalization Coordinator, is likely to respond also, so
I'll be brief. There are two things going on right now.
The first is a lawsuit filed against the California State Fish and Game
Commission by Marshall Farms, USA, INC. The lawsuit is a bit confusing, and
there is little the public can do to support its progress. What you are
most likely interested in is the latest legislation.
Californians are (or at least should be) writing, faxing, calling, and
meeting with their local representatives and asking they support, or better
yet, co-author, a ferret legalization bill to be introduced by Assemblyman
Jan Goldsmith (R-Poway) later this month. The bill does not yet have a
number, but when it is assigned one, I will have links directly to the
State's web site from the CFL page. Once there, you will be able to read
the language of the bill, check its status, and even subscribe to be
notified when changes occur.
Once introduced, the bill will first be heard by the Assembly's Water,
Parks, and Wildlife Committee (no date set yet). This is why Jeanne has
asked everyone to write the Committee Chairman, Mike Machado now. The
State's web site shows two email addresses for him: <[log in to unmask]>
and <[log in to unmask]>. If your messages get returned, that
means that he is not able to receive Internet email.
Visit the CFL web site to get further information and to catch up on what is
currently happening. If you still have questions, feel free to contact
Jeanne <[log in to unmask]> or myself.
