I'm reluctant to second-guess a vet who has seen the ferret, but dark- or
medium-colored fur growing back will also turn the skin bluish-grey for a
few days before the hairs begin to poke out.  (White and light fur seems to
turn the skin orange.)
 
Various people have asked:

I'll avoid repetition and just say, see the FAQ, part 4, section 10.6.
