Back to the subject of homing instinct in domesticated ferrets:

Occassionally, I'll take my ferrets for walks down the long hallway of our
apartment building. I noticed that on the way down the hallway, they will
go slowly, scooting along on their bellies and rubbing their faces on the
ground. On the way back down the hallway, they run along the path that they
"marked", and know immediately which apartment is theirs. By the way,
they're both fixed and descented.

Also, my boyfriend's mother used to have a ferret that had free-roam of the
outside world (UGH!). She would just call its name, and it would come
running from where ever it was. It sure knew its way home. Until it got
hit by a car, but that's another story.
