Former representative (D-Monterey) Leon Panetta has resigned as Clinton's
chief-of-staff to return to California. Rumors are that he is considering a
gubernatorial run for '98.
Ferret supporters in CA might do well to consider cultivating Panetta.
Sounds like you all have a hard road ahead again. Having the Democratic
challenger (and maybe eventual governor) on your side can only help.
You all know how best to operate. I don't know how much Panetta knows about
the issue now, but he will demand to know the positions and arguments of
both sides. And if you all do decide to support him as a block, please
follow through with your time as well as monetary contributions.
Also, keep in mind: as Paul Tsongas said, "You never know where your next
coalition is coming from." Seems like Pete Wilson and company have alienated
many a voter block. Some of those prop votes looked pretty close.
Good luck and take care,
-- Lee
