First and foremost - let me say THANK YOU to all who responded to me
concerning Binky. I got some great hints and tips, and some wonderful moral
support!
Here's her saga. I know it's a bit long - but scattered through here is
information that might help others to know what kinds of things to expect
post surgery.
Monday noon: Surgery for removal of adrenal tumor. Vet pokes around for 1.5
hours before backing out. She can't find a tumor now - though
it was clearly visible on the ultrasound. She hopes that in
all her "mushing" around - she destroyed the tumor. (huh?)
Compared the tape of the ultrasound to another ultrasound that
was done post surgery. Where did it go?!
Monday daytime: Binky stayed doped up on Torbugesic most of the day.
Monday midnight: Binky's awake and active. Still has IV in place (which
the Doc was not successful in getting in place during the
first adrenalectomy).
Tuesday 4 a.m.: Critical care nurse (also our "ferret lady" who runs the
rescue here) checked on her every 2 hours. All was
well....until now. Binky had ripped open her stitches.
Not sure how much damage was done.
Tuesday 8 a.m.: Vet goes back in to repair the damage. Only one small place
on the intestines apparently - that was oversewed. Vet
decides to take another look around for that tumor. Found
it! Pea sized tumor removed. Belly wrap in place for
security (oh yea - Binky just LOVED that!). Put on .2 ml
Baytril SubQ 2X daily to try to a) fight infection and b)
reduce/eliminate the effects that oral antiobiotics have on
the stomach.
Wednesday and Thursday: Very drowsy and mostly just wanted to be left alone.
(Could it be because I poked my nose in every 2 hours to
watch her breathe?). Still *no* appetite. Force feeding
mostly Ensure - trying to mix in duck soup, S/D a/d to no
avail. I wore most of that. Wednesday the jugular IV was
removed.
Friday: Relatively active morning, but no appetite yet. Still force feeding.
Very serious slump Friday afternoon and evening. Vet and Ferret
Lady felt she was probably just
Saturday: Got that annoying belly wrap off. Weeee!!!! Really bad
Sunday: Energy much better. Back to hiding koozies and rearranging her
squeekies. Stealing bananas - but not eating much of them. (Mostly
feeding the dog.)
Monday: Taken off of Baytril. Watching to see if appetite comes back soon.
Sutures to be removed Friday. Since the first adrenalectomy was
partial (right side) the decision was made not to immediately put
her on steriods. Will reconsider at least a short regimine to boost
her appetite if that doesn't return. Until then - Ensure it is!
So ..... I'm crossing my fingers and holding my breath!
Dooks and kisses,
Cheryl and the Wrecking Crew
