Maybe this is just for dogs ... I had a cat with a spinal cord injury who
went from partially paralyzed, unable to lift her tail or urinate ... to
able to do everything a cat does and a tail at 1/2 mast in 6 months.  She
regained bladder control overnight, it took about 30 days for most of the
pain to go away, but she continued to get better for 6 months.  In the last
several years, her tail has gone from 1/2 mast to 3/4 mast ...
 
Also, I had a ferret with an injury and it improved quickly over 2 weeks,
but continued to improve (very slowly) for months.
 
But I guess there are always anecdotal cases...
