I'm not sure why you think Totally Ferret has to be refrigerated - there are
a number of foods - including Iams Feline Lamb and Rice as well as the
Proplan line, that are naturally preserved, and none of the bag instructions
recommend refrigeration.
 
I don't toss any of the food at the end of the day - I do toss crumbs, but
not whole uneaten food - and I've been using naturally preserved foods since
93 - I've never had a problem with rancid food or sick ferrets from eating
unrefrigerated food.  The only food I've ever refrigerated is baby food.
