to supplant the advice of veterinarians who are in charge of the patient.
If the patient is not currently under the care of a veterinarian, the client
is recommended to take their ferret to one.**

Dilute bleach solution works well (about a 1:30 bleach to water ratio). Most
warehouse stores (i.e., Sam s Club) sell hospital grade disinfectants that
work well also.

A prolapsed rectum is where the large intestine folds in on itself and
protrudes out the anal opening.  I would consider anything more than a
quarter inch protrusion a prolapse.  Smaller than that is a protrusion and
may not require treatment.
 
The big concern is that the anal opening acts like a tourniquet to the
protrusion and strangluates the tissue causing it to die.
