This is also how we do it in Sweden.

When selecting the Best in Show here, all owners and candidates are lined
up, with someone else than the owner holding the ferret.

Here, we're usually happy enough if the organisers don't want to charge us
anything at all. (In Stockholm we generally don't participate if we're
charged.) The assumption seems to be that all participants are planning on
making money by selling stuff.
Sometimes we're the organisers too.
