Rochelle and Fezzik,
There are several possible causes for weight loss and loose stools including
PBD (proliferative bowel disease), eosinophilic gastroenteritis, GI
lymphsarcoma, ECE (green diarrhea) or a combination of any of these. Since
the chloramphenicol did not resolve the symptoms completely then either the
infection has become resistant to the chloramphenicol or Fezzik has more
than just PBD. If this is a case of resistance, then gentamicin is
recommended. Has he been exposed to any other ferrets that have had green
diarrhea? If so, he may have ECE which is caused by a virus and is treated
symptomatically (fluids for dehydration, force feeding/duck soup, and Amoxi
to prevent a secondary bacterial infection). With continued weight loss I
would recommend a good physical exam, blood work, and possibly x-rays.
Sounds like the vomiting was due to the Pepto-Bismol which probably
irritated his stomach which would be more sensitive than normal due to his
condition. Ferrets paw at the mouth when they are nauseated.
Good Luck,
Dr. Weiss
