Once I adopted a ferret that was so mean and so terrible ... after a year
we still were unable to even put our hands in the cage for fear of being
very badly bitten. I still have scars! She was terrible to our other
ferret at the time and we eventually decided to sell her through the
newspaper, as there didn't seem to be any other option (we sold her rather
than give her away, so we would get serious inquiries only). At the time
there were no ferret clubs, nobody I knew even had ferrets and I was at a
loss what else I could do.

A young man bought her and said he could put up with her biting (he had a
ferret that had recently died). Apparently, she was worse than he thought
because he eventually sold her as well and from there I lost track. I am
tortured, still, at not knowing her end. Terrible thoughts run through my
mind all the time.

Of course, just about a year later, the FFCR started up. All I can think is
if only I had waited just another year I could have found her a home with
one of the many wonderful people I now know who do wonders with "biters".
Of course, I try to make up for it by adopting ferrets right and left over
the last few years and doing as much as I can to talk people out of giving
away their ferrets (and we've been very successful much of the time). I
finally realized I had to stop beating myself up over this. I did the best
I could at the time, in my circumstances. I hope the ferret had a glad end,
just as I hope the one you describe was found and given a great country home
near that farm. But don't beat yourself up over it. Find your local ferret
shelter and donate some time, or some food or litter and free yourself from
some of your guilt. And try not to dwell in the past, because you can't
change it. But I know how you feel and I sympathize.
