There is a reported outbreak of distemper in some kits from an Ohio breeder.
Three kits, age 11-15 weeks, have been stricken with apparent distemper
symptoms. Two in Ohio have died, one in W. VA. is still alive with severe
neurological damage and a poor prognosis. One of the OH kits is undergoing
an autopsy.
I have been told that distemper is contagious only when symptoms are present.
Incubation period ranges from 12-42 days. Initial symptoms may include
discharge from eyes or nose, rash on chin, thickening of pads on feet and
nose, and a cough. There is no treatment, it is always fatal.
Please be sure all your pets are vaccinated before you bring home a new one.
For info on vaccination regimen, see the Ferret FAQ at

For info on distemper in ferrets, see Dr. William's page

I will post more info on this situation as and if I receive any. Anyone
with more distemper experience, please comment and add info.
