Killing Rats

On Sunday I found a, very, dead rat in the bathroom it has probably been
dead for a few days cause of the smell I'm worried about the ferrets since I
guess they been both chewing and carried the rat around, could they catch
anything from it ?  And if so what should I look out for, they seem ok, my
youngest did have a soar under his mouth but it has healed ok.
