We had the same problem, and our 3+ lb.  male won't use an official
ferret-sized box either.  Fortunately, there's a fix.  Buy a Rubbermaid
dishpan (not very expensive as ferret accessories go).  Using a utility
knife, cut a ferret-high entrance in the front of the box, like so:

        ------------------------------
 
This is important, since if you leave all of the sides tall, some
ferrets won't bother to climb in.  (They do this just to be perverse,
obviously; they will readily scale a box with 10' sides that contains
something you don't want them to get into!)
 
For really fast work and smooth edges, heat your knife blade before
cutting.
