Axel went in for another glucose test today, it was 58, so it looks like we
have a problem. My vet feels that since the only signs he is showing are
lethargy and sleeping very soundly that we should just kind of wait and
monitor him (glucose test every 6-8 weeks). He's always been a really laid
back ferret and it's possible that his glucose levels have always been low.
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone else who's gone through this and what
forms of treatment were taken and when. I'd also like to hear from the
vets if they have any suggestions. I've had shelter ferrets with
insulinoma and dealt with their illness quite well, but Axel is very
special to me and I find that I can't decide what to do in a clear manner.
My emotions get in the way. I'd welcome any ideas. BTW I thought he was
losing weight at the time I took him in for bloodwork but now he is gaining
again. He went from 3.75 to 4 pounds in the last few weeks and is getting
to the point that I may need to put him on a diet, which I am reluctant to
do with the low glucose levels. Is it better to have him overweight in his
condition or should I start adding Lite cat food to his Totally Ferret/Pro
Plan Turkey and Barley food?
