Someone mentioned Lucy's near fatal encounter at Tufts as the result of a
nip of a Vet Tech. Remember that New Hampshire does have a State law
granting a quarantine period to vaccinated ferrets involved in a nip or
scratch. It is an in-home quarantine. After 45 days you take the ferret
into a qualified vet for a health certificate. They can not seize, kill
and test your ferret as long as the rabies vaccination is with IMRAB-3,
given by a licensed vet, and the vaccination is current.
If you live in New England, it just might be worth the trip to NH to have
your ferret treated (barring major emergencies). Our shelter uses Dr. Mike
Dutton in Weare, NH (603) 529-4999. He does have Saturday hours. VERY
ferret knowledgeable
If you use another vet in NH, make sure you don't sign a release stating
that they can test your ferret if it does nip. That will take away your
right to a quarantine for the ferret. Some less ferret-knowledgeable vets
do have such papers that they ask you to sign.
