I know exactly how you felt about your loss of Shadow.  I too, had an older
fellow "Chooch" who I was madly in love with. He was my best friend.  He died
two weeks before Christmas last year and I miss him dearly.
 
He waits for you at the Rainbow Bridge, so when it's your turn, you can all
go to heaven together.  Just remember that.
