Don't let this mislead you into thinking that your ferret *might* survive
without a vaccination.  It's my understanding that distemper in ferrets is
100% (OK, maybe 99.9%) fatal.  I think this sentence might be referring to
dogs, since they have some chance of surviving distemper.
 
Get 'em all vaccinated!
