To answer your question, I must first clarify - the names are Podo and Kodo.
And Podo is the female.  The Beastmaster holds her up first saying something
like"I shall call you Podo...and you Kodo(as he picks up the male)
 
BUT - and FYI - they used tow FEMALES in the movie....
