Dr. Williams,
>>What I heard of this reaction (some vomiting and diarrhea) following a
Fervac-D injection, sounds consistent with a vaccine reaction, although it
may also be a reaction to the stress of the office visit and vaccination.<<
In this case it was a great deal more than the vomiting and diarrhea, it was
total collapse, with internal bleeding into the lungs. It was the worst
vaccine reaction that Dr. Dutton had seen in 8 years of treating ferrets.
When the Dr was finished, she had several times the normal dosage of
antihystimine and epi. in her plus an IV drip. It was sudden and violent.
You are right though, if it had been a lesser reaction, the pre-treatment
would be the way I'd go in the future, and will go on the rest of our crew,
but not for Mynee. I just don't think she'd survive. She still looks a
little frazzled after several weeks. Our standard procedure will be 1.0 ml
of Benadryl a half-hour before the vaccination. I'm seeing reactions here at
about 1 out of 60 ferrets (not counting multiple shots). In our shelter
alone, none with FROMM-D and over 200 shots; 2 with Galaxy-D out of maybe 20
shots; 2 with IMRAB and probably (estimating here since I didn't give those)
150-200 shots.
