Koto, a sprite who is thought to be approximately 3 years of age, was
adopted by me via a ferret rescue center. She had arrived at the center
(4/18/94) pregnant and within hours successfully delivered her kits.
Overall, Koto has enjoyed excellent health. Her diet has consisted of
ANF Ferret Food (until that product was discontinued), 8 in 1, and most
recently Totally Ferret.
The first signs/symptoms of her visual problems became evident to me
during the past two-weeks. While Koto has yet to walk into obstacles, I
strongly suspect she has successfully done so by compensating with her other
senses.
During the first week she responded **inconsistently** to back-light
objects moved rapidly and vertically two-feet away from her (I think she
detected the movement by vision alone.) Her apparent ability to focus her
eyes was also variable. At this time her pupils are unresponsive to a
pen-light and based on functional observations, I question if Koto can see
anything.
The vet who examined Koto also wonders if Koto is blind. The diagnosis
and cause have yet to be determined. At this time, an examination of the
fundus is scheduled for next week.
Meanwhile, the vet promised to seek-out information on the possible
causes of visual loss/impairment (she doesn't think Koto is diabetic.) I in
turn told her of the FML and that I would also request input.
Your input regarding appropriate tests (bloodwork, etc.) will be most
appreciated by the vet and me. Thank you in advance for helping us help
Koto!
Irene
