I sit here and wonder
in awe at your
wild ways
The way you
hoard and the
way you eat
The way your coat
changes a silvery
beige when the daylight
slips into the winter months
The way you use your
paws to grasp and hold
and open doors, leap
and climb
I wonder at the relatives
I see inside your movements;
the playful otter as you
scoot and slide and roll
about onto your back
The ferocious mink and
marten with the glint of
your sharp teeth as you
smile at me
How lucky I am to know you!
To have you mouth my fingers
with affection and lick my
lips when I hold you up
to my face to give you kisses.
My life is so green and
rich since you dooked
your way into it,
my hunchbacked
tiptoeing friend.
I will love you forever.
