The one European polecat I had the opportunity to see was as you
described: diferent around the head and ears. Steppe (the polecat) also had
a heavier, coarser coat that a fitch ferret. When I held him, I noticed his
muscle tone was much higher than any ferret I ever handled before or since.
These last two attributes make sense in light of his "wild" (I do not mean
this in a negative way) nature.
I'm told he -- believe it or not <VBG> -- has **much** more energy than
a fitch ferret. His guardian told me the polecat would tire him out from
playing :-) During their play sessions the polecat could leap up nearly 5'
in the air!
