As usually used, it means a cross between a polecat and a domestic
ferret. It can sometimes also mean a relatively tame polecat, or a
ferret which hasn't been accustomed to humans and is used only for
hunting, but both of those are much less common meanings.

Thanks. It was Harper's, November 1992. I'm also looking for more direct
sources, perhaps someone who's seen it (is it still practiced?) or an old
