Mary,
  Don't feel bad, the litter critters are very good at faking people off in
the litter box.  The trick that I have learned is two fold.  1) When critter
is crouching, watch for the muscles in the rump to move, no muscle movement =
fake.  2) After business is done the ferret drags rump on floor, no drag =
fake.  Good luck.
