First the story. . .. .

Last summer, I was walking the west coast trail and during a snack
break (when you've hiked for 6 days, these become VERY frequent) a
mustelid of some type crossed our path. I was amazed at how ferret-like
the behavior was. The critter walked up the path toa bout 10 meters from
us, then skirted into the brush until it was past us. It came out about 10
meters from us, looked at us for a moment, then continued on the path
wobbling its hump as it went.

Can anyone help me identify just what this thing was? IT was about
the size and shape of a female ferret. Its coat was a medium dark brown
with no markings. The only difference that I could tell it from a ferret
was that it had a pug nose that lookied almost pigish. Flat at the end
with large nostrils) Anyone got any educated guesses? the west coast
trail is on the west coast of British Columbia, and consists of pretty
thick rainforest.
