Marilyn - I believe you have gotten only half-correct information from your
source.  Ferrets in Florida do not require "worm medication" monthly, but they
require "HEARTworm" mdiecation monthly.  Fererts rarely get intestinal worms
or tapeworms, and for this, a fecal sample should be taken to your vet yearly.
 
Heartworms, however, are a problem in most of the US, and seem to be most
common in Florida's ferrets.  They are transmitted by mosquitoes, so even
indoor ferrets in heartworm-endemic areas can get them.
 
Most vets in Florida recommend all ferrets be on heartworm prevention, and I
do, too.  the preventative is given once a month, and is well tolerated.  Talk
with your vet about which one he recommends.  While ferrets can take the
medications prescribed for small dogs, properly according to weight, many vets
make up their own solution of ivermectin given in a sweet-tasting vehicle at a
dose of 3mcg/lb of ferret.  Your vet should have experience in heartworm
prevention for ferrets.
