Just a suggestion about feeding an unweaned baby ferret, try a hypodermic
syringe (no needle, please). Due to severe mastitis I had to feed Kelly and
Michael's fuzzy baby Davey for over two weeks this way. He completely
destroyed 4 kitten/puppy nursers, and it scared me that he might have
ingested some of the nipple fragments. Davey was frantic and hungry, and I
was panicked.
Thanks to life-long allergies I had some syringes around and gave it a try.
They're faster to dispense and load, there is no chance of broken glass, and
they can be used with KMR, and then on to thicker and thicker versions of DUCK
soup. Plus Davey was a voracious eater, he was hysterical when he smelled the
food and would honk for more even while eating! We'd have both been driven
insane by a dropper.
The only thing I worried about was that the hard plastic wouldn't be
comforting enough for him, but after watching him eat, the vet said it
wasn't a problem, that he obviously was seeking physical contact with me
(as a mom) and that he may have contributed to the poor mother's mastitis
if he fed from her that violently. Davey was and is a complete
sweetheart, and a very laid-back, loving ferret. He is the only normal
(sane and well-behaved) animal I have ever given Kelly and Michael.
There are probably better ways, but it was an emergency and I winged it!
