If the ferret pees on top of the poop, it is a female - if it pees in front
of the poop, it is a male.  Also, if there is an "outty" belly button, then
that is the male's penis.
 
as for protecting the carpet, get a scrap of vynal flooring and cut it so it
is 2 feet deep and a little wider that the door frame.  Cut out the sides so
it will fit snuggly over the threshold, and the ferret can now dig at the
door without tearing up the carpeting.
