Our shelter has guidelines, and a few hard and fast rules, but we try
to judge each case individually. We recently adopted a young ferret to
a 5 year old (and his parents, of course). Cody is an exceptionally
bright, sensitive child with an apparent understanding of pet animals.
IMO, this is due to a combination of how your parents raise you, and
also 'being born with it.'
Several years ago, I probably would have said 'no' without any discusion
but I have changed my viewpoint by talking in depth and meeting with
those involved.
Our Shelter does periodic followups, and I couldn't be happier with the
decision that was made. Cody and Bandit are inseparable and have become
very strong friends. Cody takes good care of Bandit, and Bandit loves
Cody. I would hate to think this beautiful relationship might not have
happened had we flat out said 'no' to a 5 year old.
