Boy, do I know the feeling!  We have the same problem with Mojo and Jordan;
they can get *in* the couch, and then can't get themselves back *out* :-(
 
We've used burlap under the couch, and they will eventually get thru that.
We finally gave up, and took the legs off the couch so that it is sitting
on the floor.  This will work. Cardboard being less easy to latch claws into
will work, but the scratching may drive you crazy.
 
Now about that corner piece with the small hole under the cushion...... ;-)
