Our oldest ferret Bibitte (french for critter) had been sick and weak for a
few weeks and we decided to bring her for a check up at a vet in Lachine
that specialises in exotic animals. He was discouraged at how weak she was
and found out that she only weighed 1-1/4 lbs. She was dehidrated from not
eating and gave her a blood test and found out that she had cancer of the
Pancrea. He gave us some prescriptions (small pills) and some nutrient in a
tube. She would not eat the nutrient and refused to eat. My spouse Lynda,
bought some diet food for humans that you mix with milk and started feeding
her that. But she did not like the feedings. Her favorite treat is
chocolate, but chocolate was not a good idea for her so my wife tried to mix
it with carob which is a substitute for chocolate and is healthy (it's
available from health food stores). Now she loves the potion. We feed her 6
to 10 times daily with a large eye dropper. She has gained some weight and
seems to feel better. Our vet said that she could like 1 week, one month or
one year. But we feel that the treatment is positive, (it's been two weeks
now) and she sure looks better. She's more active but not like she was
before. We don't mind the trouble of hand feeding her 6 to 10 times daily.
She's part of the famely and we will take care of her for as long it's
required. We also have 3 other ferrets, Fuzzy our newest he's just 7 months,
Gonzo going to be a year old and Skippy who's 3 year old and Bibitte's
daughther. Last year we lost Bibitte's mate Toupie (spinner in french) with
an incurable lung disease he was 5. We still miss the little guy.
We really enjoy the Ferret List and are glad to be in contact with other
people with ferrets so that we can share our problems and joy's.
