There's another option, one that won't harm the ferret if triggered
accidently. There are these small rectangular live mouse traps - I
found them at Orchard Supply Hardware. They were inexpensive, and work
by being tilted in one position - when the mouse climbs in to get the
bait in the far end, it tilts and the door closes. You can then either
throw out the whole thing, or release the mouse outside. Be sure to
check the trap daily, because they cannot survive for too long in it,
despite the air holes -it's cramped.
 
We successfully freed our house of vermin and let them loose at the
reservoir, which seemed like a good place for a mouse to live. We
caught 4 mice using the traps with peanut butter dabbed in the end.
Sometimes my kids tripped the traps, but that was harmless for
everyone.
