Here's another reply for the Ferret Mailing List.
 
I think perhaps that the description of ferrets which are "kept in
cages" as high strung, prone to bite, etc., was meant to apply to
those poor creatures who are literally caged all the time.  There
are still people who treat ferrets like large gerbils and never let
them out.  I'd be perfectly willing to believe that such abused
creatures suffer all the ailments described.  I _don't_ believe that
ferrets which are "caged" in the manner of most ferret owners--only
at night or when the owners aren't home--is likely to produce these
symptoms.
