Dear Friends,
I am writing to inform you of a unique opportunity to see justice served.
Vincenzo Terzoli, a commercial fisherman on the ship St. Joseph has
been arrested and booked on felony charges of Cruelty to Animals and
Illegal Use of an Explosive Devise (a violation of section 12303.3 of the
California Penal Code) after allegedly placing an explosive "seal bomb"
inside a fish and feeding it to "Oscar" a.k.a. "Jelly", a well known sea lion
who had been a friend to many in the San Pedro Harbor, his home for
the last 12 years. Oscar, an endangered species, had become accustomed
to eating from the hands of the many fisherman who regularly fed him
fish and scraps, and no longer hunted on his own. Terzoli allegedly killed
him in the presence of a number of witnesses who saw his death,
including a tour boat of sightseers. The explosives, distributed by the
California Seal Control Corporation are legal, but are intended to be
thrown into the water, where they sink 10-15 feet and explode emitting a
sound that frightens seals and sea lions away from an area. Because of
the exemplary work of Deputy District Attorneys Robert Brodrey and
Chris Chelidan, the Los Angeles Police Department Bomb Squad was
included in the investigation, allowing for the potential felony conviction,
and a sentence of up to five years imprisonment. Please take a few
minutes to write two letters to make sure that this case does not result in
a plea bargain, and to send a message of support for Oscar and the
officials who worked hard on this case.
