Nope, it wasn't that one. What is the deal? Here it is again.
[Laura's having problems sending stuff to the list. With a mailing

acknowledges of articles that do make it into the list?]

On the question of old ferrets and steroids:
I would say if the steroids are helping to improve that much the
quality of life of a ferret who is in his/her twilight years, then go for it.
One word of caution. Please ask your vet that (s)he suggest the lowest dose
possible for improvement. Steroids are amazing things, but the long-term side
effects are unfortunately quite negative (though reversable by removing the
drug). Steroids cause immune suppression -- that is why they decrease
swelling, itching, and many other effects caused by immune components. The
short term effect is very relieving, but the long-term effect is often immune
suppression to the point of being very susceptible to infection (especially
opportunistic infection -- infection by agents normally present but not
normally harmful in an immune competent individual). However, in an old
ferret, steroids might be the ideal answer -- better to be comfortable for
what ever time (s)he has left! Just thought people should know it is not an
ideal wonder drug.
