We stappled cardboard on the bottom of chairs and couches.  It seems to
work.  Check appliance stores, furnature stores to finds big pieces or you
can tape together smaller pieces with something like duct tape.  We've
usually removed the fabric from the bottom of chairs and couches, it seems
to be more dangerous in term of threads that get stuck in claws etc than
other cloths.
