One of our ferrets, Meltdown, has had a severe mite problem  that
has caused hair loss wherever she scratched and bit (her tail was
almost entirely bald).
 
We had heard that insects and arachnids are naturally repelled by
citrus. As a long shot we started treating her tail with a citrus
based product  called:  "Natural  Animal  100%  Herbal  Dog  Coat
Enhancer"  [mfged by Ecosafe Products, dist by Gardens Alive, Hwy
48, POB 149, Sunman, IN   47041 ]. Believe it or  not  the  stuff
works.  She  has  stopped pulling her hair out and the tail looks
more like a ferret tail than a rat tail. The stuff  also  appears
to be a good treatment for ear mites after a bath.
 
Our vet said that this stuff is extremely safe...
 
[There's another type that our vet uses specifically for ear mites.
It's actually a soap, but I don't have the name handy - everything's
still in storage]
