That it got progressively worse sounds like it could have been a
brain tumor.  My parents had to put one of our cats down last semester
because of one.  He just got worse and worse, and in the end had to
be put down because he could no longer move even when he was well.
You probably did the right thing if you kept her from that.  It's hard
to truly do the wrong thing when you have their best interests at heart.
