Dear Melanie and Troy Lynn,

I was going to write to you each individually, then it occurred to me
there are a lot of us who might, maybe, find comfort here as well.

My Mother is strictly a non-Ferret person, and a bit of a non-believer
as well. Even though she does not understand, it hurts her to see her
eldest in pain. One day after I'd expended most of my energy railing
again the cruelty of humans in general and then digging yet another
grave for yet another of my children, I called her, in tears of course.
I have yet to understand how anyone can abuse, abandon, neglect another
life to the point where we as care takers have only one duty left -
hold them 'til they are gone, let them feel peace, infuse them with our
quiet and strength and allow them to pass with warmth of spirit instead
of in cold and fear. In tear choked words I asked her why. Why.

She drew upon the things that I believe to try to provide the first
steps of healing. She reminded me In my world we are here to learn and
when our lessons are complete, we get to go Home. If this is the case
then it must be the worst of the worst we get, only to hold some times
for mere minutes, must have had one lesson left and that was to know
the touch of love. Once felt and understood, if even for the briefest
of seconds, that final lesson was learned and that little soul set
free.

If you have followed the 2 year journey of my now 4 year old niece and
the love affair between her and our Owl, you know he is teetering on
the decision to move on. For months now I have tried to prepare her for
his passing. Most recently we went out and walked the dozens of graves
in my backyard. When she asked if I loved a particular ferret I'd only
had for his final few hours, I responded with "Honey, I love them all".

I believe that love sets them free.

Peace ladies, and I am so sorry for your losses.
