My wonderful vet also now uses the *tummy shot*. My first experience
with this method was with Noel, a tiny girl that needed to be helped.
Dr explained her veins were collapsing and to get one would be
difficult. I was a bit nervous as it sounded a bit gruesome. Dr
explained it would be quick and less traumatic than getting a vein.

That tummy shot was quick, Noel did not flinch or give any indication
she felt it.

I am a person that is able to be with my pet in their final minutes of
life, so was there holding her and distracting her with head rubs etc.
Since then I have always requested this method.

Recently I had to use the emergency clinic at 2AM. The vet on duty
wanted to insert a catheter. I asked for the *tummy shot*. He said he
could, but *suggested* he take my ferret to the back while I waited. I
explained I had several experiences with this method, and I would be
able to comfort the ferret only if I was with him. Thankfully he
agreed.

I know some folks are bothered by the euthanasia process, and choose
to have the ferret sedated first. My experience with the tummy shot (7
ferrets) is that any sedation prior is un-necessary and just another
poke.

Shot is given with me holding and comforting, and they just slip away,
more like falling asleep.... very peaceful.
