The key is to give them as much one on one attention as you can. If you
can get them outside, that will help. Anywhere where they can run for a
bit will help, even if it's just in the bathroom for a bit. Changing
things around often is really big. I advise adoptive families to change
things around nearly daily. They get bored so quickly. Try adding to
the cage plastic bags, paper bags, crinkle sacks, crinkle tubes,
pillowcases, flannel sheet they can burrow through, boxes with holes in
them, and upside down litter boxes. Hide treats throughout the cage.
Make sure to unhide any favorite toys so they have to hide them again.
Put bags of things in the cage they can root through, like paper or
even groceries. I let my ferrets root through the bags of groceries
after removing anything they can hurt or that can hurt them. They love
it. Put a good size bowl of water in the cage that they can play in.
Add ice cubes to the water and they will probably snorkle for them. I
set up a litter pan with about an inch of water in it and dip half
plastic eggs and shaving cream caps in the water. The ferrets have a
blast drinking the water from the items and pulling them out of the
water. They actually line up begging if I take it up and don't put it
back down.
