Thank you ladies for your support & input on this one.
Stephanie, I well remember what you went through at the time and we
were mortified when it happened, particularly as we also knew the NZ
breeder.
Danee, as a result of what happened in Holland, and to be absolutely
sure we did not unknowingly have ADV here in Australia, testing kits
were imported and a very widespread collection of ferrets from
different breeders/owners in all states were all properly tested and
found to be 100% clear of the disease.
Whether it is by pure luck or not, the last ferrets imported into
Australia was back in 1936 and, although I am not sure when Aleutians
disease reared it's ugly head, I believe it was long after this.
Regardless of when or why this disease appeared in ferret communities
throughout the world, believe me, all ferret owners/breeders in
Australia are extremely grateful that the only contagious diseases
we have to worry about are Distemper & the common cold.
