Purevax was NOT the vaccine that MIGHT have been associated with DIM.
Heck, it is not even made by the same company.
As far as I know Purevax will still be made. Ferrets are not the only
species that use it. Zoos protect a number of vulnerable wild animals
with it.
There are two things which caused the shortage. The first is that it
is made on a line which also is used to make other products that have
higher profit so is only made periodically. The second is that when a
recent batch had its pre-release testing the company considered it too
weak, so rather than sell it they took a loss on it.
The rumors, both bad and good, arose NOT from the companies themselves
but from some members of the ferret community.
Neotech has NOT falsely told people that their vaccine has testing it
does not have. They instead have come out and said that they currently
have no data indicating that Neovax works in ferrets. A false good
rumor can hurt a company as badly as a false negative rumor.
There are at least as many false negative rumors going around about
Purevax, none of which has turned out to be true when investigated.
This is like the false rumors good and bad which some makers of other
types of ferret products, especially foods, have faced in the past.
For some reason both ferret and fish groups tend to have a lot of false
rumors -- the vast majority of rumors being false, actually. I wonder
how that compares to groups about other animals. I do know there was
a veracity study of spoken and internet rumors years ago which showed
that in general around 90% of rumors are wrong, both spoken and over
the internet.
