Glad to see your ferrets are showing improvements! It really is amazing
the benefits of feeding raw as well as more appropriate protein
sources. The changes within the ferret are not just visible and
palpable, as you've seen they satisfy an inner emotional/psychological
need too!
If you are offering a variety of protein sources and the ferrets are
eating bones you will NOT need to offer any supplemental vitamins. As
there have been no studies done to confirm ferrets actual needs, you
may end up unbalancing them. Besides from the research that has been
done and reported, ferrets more closely follow canine genetics(except
for taurine needs) so focusing on cat vitamins may not do well for the
ferret. I completely avoid any products with sweeteners so that means
NO ferretvite and NO hairball treatments with malt, maltodextrin,
molasses, dextrose, corn syrup etc. healthy calories come from food
protein and ft sources. Sugars are simply appetite enhancers but can
become addictions that divert the ferret away from proper nutrition
which is why kibble mfrs utilize sweeteners. Don't forget to toast5 and
then pulverize the egg shells and mix them into your egg feedings, or
use them to encrust the heart with. Glad to hear your diet changes are
proving successful! While fat is considered fat, and ferrets don't seem
to be picky about lapping up oils, my choices for them are free choice
unsalted lard licks and occasional treats with extra virgin olive oil.
ferrets can be oversupplemented with vitamin A so go easy on fish oils.
Cheers,
Kim
