I grew up in Louisiana, and I have heard of that rescue a few years
ago. I don't know if they're still active. It doesn't surprise me that
someone said they'd eat the ferret. They probably think they're wild
animals, and many of the rednecks aren't compassionate to animals. I
had classmates who took pride in making me cry when they told me they
enjoyed shooting neighborhood cats.
