When I was pregnant my doctor (naturopath and midwife) informed me
not to clean out ANY litter pans or cages, including ferrets, cats,
hamsters, birds, etc. As long as I didn't do the cleaning, I could do
all the playing with the animals that I wanted. Toxoplasmosis is one
concern, but there are other things that if you are not careful can
cause problems too. My doctor informed me that this was extremely rare
and there was NO reason to get rid of animals, just be careful around
them. I did have to do the cage cleaning for a while because my husband
was out of the country and I just put a mask on and wore gloves. Talked
to my doctor about it and she said that was the best that could be done
and I would probably be okay talking the precautions that I was. Hope
that this helps.
