Actually, there are advantages to both ways of doing it.

Gift cards do get more of the donation to the benefit of the shelters,
and I don't know of a shelter that isn't hurting right now.

On the other hand, it's really special to get handmade hammies and
sleepsacks.

It's really great to see the care and love that goes into these
goodies. I'd hate to see that go away.
