Despite all the pro and con, which I have to admit took me by surprise,
how can there be anything bad in giving to others or making someone's
life a little happier, regardless of how many legs they have, I think
one thing, one big thing has been over looked.
I would have said I'm typing on a keyboard so I'm obviously not a
ferret, but those bridge greeters and a few others really put some of
the rest of us to shame! So being eloquent and able to push keys in
the right order has nothing to do with a lot of things. But for me, a
shelter Mom, there's something that's been missed. Of course I love
watching the kids tear into the new toys, play in the boxes and with
the paper, but I have made some incredible, long term, deep connections
with some of the people behind those boxes.
I'd love to list them and tell you how they have eased my burdens,
shared in my losses, saved a life by something as simple as sharing
information, laughed with me, cried with me. Not everyone 'gets the
ferret thing', no one in my family, not my other 'normal' friends,
but these people more than get it - they live it.
So while you're considering the pros and cons, the ferrets, the costs,
the fun and the work, also consider that you may very well turn out to
be one of those people who makes that connection for someone, some
where, who is struggling kind of alone, who won't be . . .
